Dame Freya Stark
1893 – 1993
Freya Stark was the first European to travel to many parts of the Middle East. She spoke multiple different languages including Arabic and Turkish. Her first book, The Valley of the Assassins, was the result of many trips to Iran. She went on to write 23 more.

Isabella Bird was an intrepid traveler and writer who ventured as far as Tibet and the Hawaiian Islands. Her first voyage to the United States resulted in An Englishwoman in America. A great read!
